Version 1.0.4: Amazon-OnTheGo is now Java Verified. The Verified builds will hopefully be available via several manufacturers' web sites shortly.
About OnTheGo
Amazon-OnTheGo is based on the widget of the same name that I developed for the bluepulse platform. Bluepulse is a fun platform for building mobile applications, but when developing the Amazon widget, I was disappointed that some powerful features had to be excluded because of limitations of the platform.
Two months later, I began using the J2ME Polish 1.3 beta, and wanted more than just a simple test project with which I could exercise some of the new Polish features. Combined with the release of the new mobile portal at mobile.java.com, the conditions were set for a new project. I could leverage the work done in the widget, but extend it, and provide some powerful new features that could not be deployed via bluepulse. I could also exercise the Polish beta thoroughly, and submit a project to the Java portal in one fell swoop.
The original intention was to include several midlets in a suite that also included eBay-OnTheGo and Flickr-OnTheGo, but I scaled back the scope of the project to minimize testing costs. If there is demand for more of this sort of thing, just let me know.
Release Updates
Version 1.0.3: beta update. Minor changes, including help edits and button placement updates, to comply with Java Verified Unified Testing Criteria.
Version 1.0.2: beta update. Minor changes, including connection timeouts, modified alert timing, and clearer error messages, were implemented to comply with Java Verified Unified Testing Criteria. Sony-Ericsson, Samsung, and Nokia builds are now signed.
Version 1.0.1 is the base release. It is somewhere between an alpha and a beta release, but I'm calling it a beta, because as everyone knows, we all need another beta. <grin> I really need some help and feedback about how this looks and works on different handsets, so if you have any information or comments, please let me know.
